The "Alexandrinka" is more than just a theatre. It is a unique phenomenon that bears witness to the high status of Russian culture, as do the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Arts, the State Hermitage and the State Russian Museum. It is Russia's oldest theatre and the forerunner of the entire Russian State theatre system. The history of the Alexandrinka is part of Russia's national legacy. This theatre has its one character, a unique spirit and style, its own outlook on the world, and occupies a prominent position among national theatres all over the globe. The Alexandrinka is a "traditionalist" theatre, but it also seeks out new forms and revolutionary changes, engaging in bold experiments and reaching out to the world theatre. The Alexandrinka is a "theatre of the glorious artists", with not just actors but famous producers, production designers, composers and playwrights all having served it faithfully. Disposed to stringent and integral forms and the cultivation of unity of meaning, the Alexandrinka unfailingly proves its importance as a national theatre from a historical standpoint, responsible for Russia's cultural destiny.
